A cancer diagnosis can be a frightening thing for individuals and families alike. Having to learn new vocabulary and new systems to receive healthcare can be challenging. It can be a relief to have trained professionals and trusted people to assist with navigating all the information. Cancer patient navigation is the support given to people throughout their cancer journey to lessen the burden of decision making, give comfort during a challenging time, and hopefully, improve outcomes for the person. The types of support and who it comes from are wide-ranging. It may be practical support to help people get to appointments or deal with insurance, it may be emotional support, or it may be support with understanding and making medical decisions. From medical providers and community health workers to spiritual leaders, peers and family members, this care comes from many people and places.
There are many things going right with cancer patient navigation but there are still gaps to fill. OHSU’s Knight Cancer Institute Community Outreach and Engagement team is setting out to learn from individuals with lived experience throughout Oregon about the strengths and weaknesses in the cancer patient navigation system. This community input will inform considerations for enhancing patient navigation systems. In Prineville, OHSU staff will be hosting two community conversations with patients, survivors, and their caregivers to learn about their cancer journeys.
Are you willing to talk to us about your cancer journey and provide feedback to help improve the cancer patient experience throughout Oregon? Join a conversation!
